Donnie was a two-sport standout for Fenwick and was a leader contributing significantly to the success of Fenwick athletics during his high school career. He was elected captain of both the football and baseball teams. Donnie was a 3-year starter at linebacker and 2-year starter at fullback for the 1983-1985 teams, including the 1984 team that was OHSAA Division V state runner up, and the 1985 team that finished 8-4 reaching the second round of the playoffs. In 1985 Donnie earned AP Class A All Ohio First Team, Mid-Miami League First Team, Southwestern Ohio District First Team, Journal Herald Area All Star, and Schwab Memorial Award. He finished his career with 193 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 7 touchdowns. Donnie was also the starting pitcher and first baseman on the Falcon baseball team. He had a career pitching record of 12 wins and 4 losses. His pitching efforts were instrumental in the 1986 Falcon Baseball team finishing as Class A District Champions, and he earned the Pride of Middletown Athlete Award. Donnie was also class President for 3 years and graduated 3rd in the Class of 1986. In 1990 he graduated from the University of Dayton Magna Cum Laude.

Donnie was also class President for 3 years and graduated 3rd in the Class of 1986. In 1990 he graduated from the University of Dayton Magna Cum Laude.
