Pat was a three sport student-athlete, graduating in the top 10% of his class. He was a starter in both his junior & senior years on the football, basketball, and baseball teams. His senior year, he was selected First Team All-League in all three sports, quite a Hat Trick!
Pat played forward for a Falcons basketball team that had 18 wins and lost in the regional finals. Only the state championshp team of 1982 went farther. At only 6'2" tall on a team blessed with two 6'5" players he was the leading rebounder due to his excellent timing and jumping ability. Additionally, on a team with balanced scoring, Pat was a consistent double digit scorer, especially in the tournament run. His excellent defensive skills usually had him guarding the opponent's leading scorer.
On the football team Pat played end, going both ways(offense & defense). He was among the leaders in tackles and their losses were to a 10-0 Franklin team, that was led by QB Bob Timberlake (led Michigan to Rose Bowl), and to 10-0 McNicholas team (led by FB/LB Will Sanders-Ohio State). Highlights that season included a 20-18 comeback win over Fairfield and an upset of a Dayton Roth team that went undefeated the next year.
On the baseball team that finished 19-4 his senior year, he was the top pitcher with two no-hitters to his credit, one over state finalist New Miami. When not pitching he played in the outfield, usually batting 4th or 5th. He also was a key player for the Middletown Post 218 team that won the American Legion state championship.
Upon graduation from Fenwick, Pat received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. In his freshman year he played football and baseball at a time when Navy's program was among the best in the country. After his freshman year he decided to concentrate on baseball. His senior year he was 7-1, pitching four consecutive shut outs, and was selected to the ECAC all-league team as well as being named Navy's MVP. Pat still does not like to talk about this much since his lone loss was to ARMY, a team he had lost to in both his sophomore & junior years.
After graduating from Annapolis in 1965, he served six years in the Marine Corps, including a tour in Vietnam. He also received an MBA from George Washington University during his time in the Marine Corps. After leaving the Marine Corps, Pat worked for 30 years at Amoco Oil Company, primarily in the Information Technology field, and is now enjoying his retirement. Pat is married to wife Sharon and they have three grown daughters and six grandchildren. They currently reside in Des Moines, Iowa. |
